IDENTITY THEFT... Don't be a Victim!

Identity theft happens when an unauthorized person obtains and illegally uses your personal information, such as your Social Security number (SSN), credit card, or any other account information, to establish new accounts, credit cards and/or loans in your name.

Victims of identity theft are usually left with the expensive and time consuming task of clearing their name and credit history.

Here are some ways to prevent identity theft:

  • Before providing financial information, know whom you are dealing with, how the information will be used, and to whom it will be available.
  • Only give your Social Security number when absolutely necessary. Ask if another form of identification can be substituted, such as a driver's license.
  • Store documents with personal information in a safe place. Dispose of unwanted documents that contain personal information by tearing or shredding.
  • Do not carry your Social Security number in your purse or wallet.
  • Request a copy of your credit report from each credit-reporting agency every year. The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act) of 2003 requires each major credit bureau to provide one free credit report annually, to consumers who request a copy, (call 877-322-8228 or visit  www.annualcreditreport.com).

Phishing, Spoofing and Spamming

Phishers      get your personal information by using e-mails and websites designed to look legitimate to deceive you into submitting personal data such as user names and passwords.

Spoofers      create a replica of an existing Web page to fool you into submitting personal, financial or password data.

Spammers   send unsolicited e-mail advertisements that may include viruses or hoaxes.

Enhanced Account Security and Confidentiality

In order to enhance the security and confidentiality associated with transactions you do at DSCU, we will now be asking for your driver's license or state identification card.

We will then electronically match select information on your license with information that you gave us when your account was opened. This provides us with the correct account number to insure proper access to your account. The chance of someone else in the lobby hearing your account number is also eliminated since you don't have to say the numbers. Your signature and photo are also verified at this time.

While this process may be an inconvenience to some, most members will appreciate the added security and confidentiality.

                                    Courtesy Pay Enhances Overdraft Protection

We know that mistakes can occur when using your checking account. DSCU wants to help you avoid returned checks when your account becomes overdrawn. The details of our newest service, called Courtesy Pay, were recently mailed to select members in good standing with the ability to overdraw their checking accounts up to $500. If you were not included in this mailing, please call if you are interested in Courtesy Pay. If you currently do not have a checking account with DSCU, this could be the reason why you were waiting to switch. Courtesy Pay will benefit you in the following ways:

  • Protects you from the embarrassment of returned checks for as low as $18 per item
  • Prevents additional returned check fees from merchants
  • Protects your credit rating and avoids late fees if payments to mortgagecompanies and other creditors are late because of returned checks
  • Protects you in case of an error in your check book
  • No charge until activated

Previously, overdraft protection was limited to those members that had authorized overdraft protection, such as a line of credit or automatic transfers from your other accounts. This type of overdraft protection, if authorized, will always be applied first.

If you have questions or do not want Courtesy Pay, please call 313-581-2002 or 800-581-2003.
